I'm buying a laptop next week and will be thinking of one of these.

Which one should i go for and why? Should i bother when the laptop will come with MS Works?

I'm out of the loop with office software. Thanks.

Open Office will handle anything you can throw at it, in fact it can handle corrupt Word documents that make Word bail out, its less taxing on hardware and just feels nicer to use making it my personal choice in work when I need to produce a document or spreadsheet.

MS Works is the mongy kid that you really don't want to play with.

MS office is incompatible with itself. If you send a .doc or .pub to someone with a different version, they can't open it.

I cannot abide Microsoft Office. Open Office wins it for me.

Sorry, but thats not totally true.

If your working on a new version of office, it can cause problems when other people on older version want to open your documents. But otherwise its generally fine.

THe only one I have ever really seen a massive problem for this is Office 2007.2008 with the new DocX format, a cause of many a support call nightmare when the client refuses to accept changing a drop down in a dialog box as a valid workaround.

I hate users, had one today and we reset her password to p4ssword, easy enough to explain over the phone you would think. No.

"Does the four have to be in capitals?"

I'm surprised these people can breathe unassisted.

Don't get me started on users.

I'm in a ranty mood enough as it is, without getting involved in an anti user rant.

I think we should create a "Users" rant thread

Ahhh.

They are basically screen shots, either of emails sent to us, or screen grabs customers have set as a method of showing us their fault - which show the user to be of a general level of mongishness.

For example, an email asking if you can download the internet, but not the normal internet, which is PC only. It would seem their is a littl known version of the internet, for the Mac, which can be downloaded to a hard drive.

When Andy has sorted the domain issues out, I shall find and link them for your amusement, since I forget his Flickr details.

Rayanne Graff: i spoke to him a couple of times and that was in October of 2009.
the doc: Wow, a proper old head
Rayanne Graff: Yeah, he was the 15th person to join.
satansrubberduck: I didn't directly start Spam. Also the proof of that long since disappeared.
Rayanne Graff: No, it didn't; the Spam spam spam you made in 2002 is on page 105 of the Spam board.
satansrubberduck: Oh. I looked for it years ago and couldn't find it. The colour tags are (thankfully) broken.
satansrubberduck: Odd to think it's been over a decade since I first got involved with 'Zine.
Claire: It's not odd to me since I've just had the exact same conversation with you...
