Everyone's favourite/least favourite award. This year's shortlist is...
Adele - 19
British Sea Power - Do You Like Rock Music?
Burial - Untrue
Elbow - The Seldom Seen Kid
Estelle - Shine
Laura Marling - Alas I Cannot Swim
Neon Neon - Stainless Style
Portico Quartet - Knee-Deep in the North Sea
Rachel Unthank & The Winterset - The Bairns
Radiohead - In Rainbows
Robert Plant & Alison Krauss - Raising Sand
The Last Shadow Puppets - The Age of the Understatement
Typically with the Mercury, absolutely anyone could win. Except the token jazz entry. Thoughts/predictions? I'd predict Neon Neon off that list, although a lot of the scenesters and blogs are saying Burial...

Much better than last year's abysmal list. Not too many obvious ones left out. M.I.A should be on there somewhere though, and probably winning it. Would certainly make for a more worthy choice than Adele or Laura Marling. So very dull.
As for who should win of those nominated, in can really only be Elbow. They've been getting better every record and this one is just incredible. Can see them picking up the award too. LSP, Radiohead or Burial wouldn't be a disaster either.

I'd like to see Elbow or British Sea Power win, personally.

So would I, although the thing is they've both released better albums. It's rumoured Elbow only lost to Ms Dynamite in 2001 by a single vote.

Radiohead for me, best thing they've done in years. Also liked the Neon Neon album, Estelle was good at Glastonbury and I listened to the Burial album a lot when it came out (though I preferred the debut). The rest I've not heard or care about, though Elbow probably deserve something for sticking around.

I keep meaning to listen to neon neon, loving the super furry animals as I do. I've only heard one album from this list so I hope radiohead wins
Also it seems like it's only been a couple of weeks since this last happened.

That Ms Dynamite album was genuinely terrible, don't know what the judges were thinking that year.
Anyway, it'd have to be Burial for me out of that lot. I think it'll be between him and Radiohead - they may be an obvious choice but there's a chance they'll get the 'it's about time' vote. I'd be sorely tempted to stick a few quid on Burial at 7/1, but I can't really be a*sed.
Christ knows what Adele is doing on there though, and that last British Sea Power album is the worst thing they've done by a street. Dull as dish. Laura Marling bores the a*se off me as well. And it's funny how Estelle is only getting real recognition now she's turned herself into an identikit R'n'B warbler.

Estelle's success is frankly staggering. She has a weak voice, weak songs and is horrendously ugly.
No one's mentioned The Last Shadow Puppets yet... Anyone heard it? It's an interesting one, definitely. It's generally accepted that no one wins twice, but this would tick all the Mercury boxes otherwise.

Radiohead or Robert Plant & Alison Krauss. Elbow wouldn't be disappointing either, but sh*t like Adele and and Estelle can gtfo. On the strength of their music, they don't even deserve to win a £5 WH Smiths gift voucher, let alone a Mercury.

I've only heard one of the albums, so my choice would likely be just a wee bit biased I reckon.

This.
Also, Adele and what was that lyric..should I give up, or should I just keep chasing pavements? Jesus, what a f*cking awful song. I just want to grab her by her chubby little head and say, give up, love. There's no way you're ever gonna catch that ice cream truck weighing what you do.

I just looked up the last shadow puppets single and that seems pretty good, though I do like the arctic monkeys. I know some people (stu
) don't though.
It'd be cool if radiohead won as it is a really good album, especially coming after hail to the thief. Though I guess they'd probably be the band that would benefit the least from winning.

And they'd probably make some incredibly hackneyed statement with the winnings cheque and disagreeing with American foreign policy and such. Spare us.
