Been meaning to do this for ages, just a place to review any gigs you've been to, comment on them or whatever. I was gonna write one of last night's Wildhearts gig in Manchester but I'm totally knackered and I can't be bothered to do it properly. An interesting set anyway, loads of B-sides and rarities, including a rapturous 29x the Pain, a spin through Geordie In Wonderland and an outing for their knockabout cover of the theme tune from Cheers. Tremendous stuff, and the Ginger one's doing an acoustic set at the Music Box in February. I'll be there with bells on

This is the review of Gogol Bordello that I've written for Planet Sound.

"There's good gigs, there's great gigs and then there's this. Muse may have the monopoly on pyrotechnic histrionics, but tonight Gogol prove again that they're the best live band around. Eugene Hutz, coming across like Jack Sparrow on E, is a tremendous cabaret frontman, the band's energy and enthusiasm is contagious, and the Met goes barmy. Accusations of being a mere novelty act are way off the mark - their eclectic sound encompasses everything from punk and reggae to ethnic folk - and even after a forty minute encore the crowd still want more. "If you've never seen us before, welcome to the family," says Eugene halfway through. It's a hell of a party in Gogol's world and everyone's invited, so why not come along for the ride? 10/10"

Of course they will. They ask for 60-80 words, you must have 120 there and they crop it down even if you keep within the boundaries.
They also completely f*ck up a couple of sentences at random.
They subtly stopped advertising the £10 things when they had that Christmas competition on, and as far as I can tell they're not back yet. If they are, I've missed out on some cash!

I noticed something today - Kat Lister's really, really awful. Of course, compared to the horror that is He Who Must Not Be Named she's mere play-dough.

It's odd sometimes when I send stuff they butcher it beyond all recognition, and sometimes they don't touch it at all. Seems to me Kat Lister has come from Smash Hits or one of those sh*trags, she's got no idea how tailor her writing style for the audience and she still thinks she's writing for teenage girls. Said it before and I'll say it again, they should just give the job to me. I've even considered asking them once or twice........

It used to be 80-100 words as well, as far as I remember, although it might have changed - I ain't got the Teletext here so I only read it on t'internet.

John Cage Bubblegum -

I've been waiting for years for Earls to have a free-for-all and just throw a writing job up in the air for everyone to try for. There are thousands of people more knowledgable and capable of doing a better job than the likes of Kat Lister.

Voididol! Or something. It might be a good idea, the freelance writers really are f*cking gash. They don't know sh*t, and you can take the writing to bits on a technical level.

Well, they f*cking mollered the last one, so this one's a little shorter. If they edit this one, I think a campaign of letter-bombing may be the order of the day.

"The Gutter Twins, Manchester Hop and Grape, 08/04/08

The gig is rammed. The old heads are out in force tonight for the sleaziest pairing in rock, and justifiably so. Lanegan's monolithic, almost biblical stage presence and Dulli's lecherous swagger combine for a compelling performance that oozes with barely-controlled menace. The songs take on a new life in a live setting, harder and heavier than on the album, an encore featuring songs from both vocalists' back catalogues has the crowd in raptures and a closing Blackberry Belle brings the house down. Brilliant. 9/10"

Hmmmmmm. Easily within the word limit, I even had an email off Earls complimenting me on the review and they still f*cking edited it. I give up

The Black Angels at the Brudenell last night:

You get the feeling that this isn't really the right setting for their inimitable brand of drugged-up desert blues, but they still provide a brooding, sinister spectacle. Keyboards drone, basses throb like blisters, gales of feedback abound and the new songs manage to sound even more frazzled than the old ones. In a better venue this could have been truly memorable, but as it is it's a solid show that leaves the handful who turned up waiting for them to come back and play the Cockpit. 8/10

The Subways, at Leicester Uni Union, were actually a lot better than I expected them to be.

Though I did feel horrendously out of place knowing only two songs... :-[

The frontman has so much energy he really got the crowd going and was just generally really fun Good night indeed. AND AND the support acts were actually decent for a f*cking change. Didn't catch the name of the first one, but the second one was The Screening. Might go see them at The Charlotte post-Boyzone.

Rayanne Graff: Yeah, he was the 15th person to join.
satansrubberduck: I didn't directly start Spam. Also the proof of that long since disappeared.
Rayanne Graff: No, it didn't; the Spam spam spam you made in 2002 is on page 105 of the Spam board.
satansrubberduck: Oh. I looked for it years ago and couldn't find it. The colour tags are (thankfully) broken.
satansrubberduck: Odd to think it's been over a decade since I first got involved with 'Zine.
Claire: It's not odd to me since I've just had the exact same conversation with you...
