Some people find it's intelligence level has been sapped, the spam forum is a curse and there's mind numbing boredom.
Personally I feel that the transience of membership has left some of the hierarchy, because that's what it is, alienated from the forum. That's just my opinion. Give me yours.
You might have heard there was a thread like this before, but it proved too controversial. So had to be sterilised. This thread isn't having a go at anyone. The Abyss however, doesn't shirk from the controversy.

Spam is the main problem, but I just wonder if people would be as bothered about the Spam board if it didnt increment the post count? I know i'd still post there... its something to do when I need a break from my work. Post counts aren't particularly riveting, I don't get the deal surrounding them. Conversational has its moments, but it's not very stimulating. Its sort of peaks and troughs with that board. Polls serves its purpose I suppose, and there's a few good threads knocking about in it. JoeyJoJoels sometimes has its good threads, but it's too quiet. Not having a go in the slightest, but no ones posted in there since May 24th, and before that it was a good week. Rants is purpose-serving, and entertaining t'other day when our new companion 'lardbotttom' had a spot of fun. This board is good except there's 4 mods, but not 4 mods worth of stuff to read and talk about.
There. I wanted to say that in the other thread but obviously never got chance. Obviously I could do something about what I've said instead of writing about it, but the thread does say 'the state of vr'.
I think VR's being killed by sterilisation too. Every time something mildly controversial happens it gets locked or deleted, and seeing as the point of forums is for people to be able to say what they think so long as it's not approval of neo-nazis and gang-rape, if you take away and semblance of debate you're left with the boring shell of the VR we're now seeing.
It's not terminal. So long as we're allowed to say what we thing and VR's not too further separated into cliques and hierarchies, I can see a recovery. But at the moment, it's just not special anymore.
The way i see spam is, there's nothing substantial to comment on, and it's more a way to pass time. I agree in that i don't really use it to increase my post count, it's just...something to do.
I also feel this column, as well as Joel's and Jos. has become stale. We have four mods, and there's only two people carrying it. I can't erally comment on generic juices as far as that's concerned, but it does have its moments.
I suggest a rotation of columns on an annual basis. It's been suggested before and I think it's the wisest move to keep this site fresh.
i read the threads i like, usually based on who started them or who has posted in them, and ignore the ones i don't. seems to be more of the latter lately, however.
I don't get it myself but people must like it because there's only something like 400 posts and about 8000 reads. It's not my main issue with VR, but it's not something I've ever read.
Officially female according to Pamplemeese Decree.
*I* read it every couple of days, but it's not as if that thread invites a declination of quality, so to speak. It's locked every time it's updated, so it can't really be considered intrusive in that sense. I know that's not what you meant, but it's pretty much keeping itself to itself, even though it looks like nearly all the links are broken
its not all me yknow. admittedly yes, i do make up most of the views for it from viewing, unlocking and posting, but i know some people do read it. even if they didnt tho i wouldnt care, i do it as much for myself as anyone else, if not more so. and since it is locked after each update its not bothering anyone
the reason it looks like most of the links are broken is cos i copy the url straight from the yahoo comics site. they only keep an archive of a few weeks, so once they take it down its gone for good
Recently I've been less active, only really showing any prolonged interest in the music board (where I think Robbie is doing a good job), in the mix tape thread, as it's something that's directly including me. I'm not suggesting a thread must do this to get my interest, hehe, that'd be too selfy (yes, selfy) for words, but it's just the reason why I've been posting in that particular thread loads.
I'm losing this post...Anyway, my theory for the decline in interest in threads on VR ispretty damn similar to Martin's evaluation. However I don't see spam as the problem. Has there not always been a thriving spam thread? Surely it doesn't mean people can't post interesting things in the other threads? I know I can't really speak of late as I've been really dis-interested in most threads, but I just feel that the consistently successful spam thread (in its own right) happens to be running parrallel to the other non-thriving boards, so it seems to get the blame. I'm not suggesting for a second that the spam board is some amazingly insightful board which is worth more, mentally and emotionally, than the other boards, just that it seems to run seperate from the rest of VR in some ways and I don't think it's the reason why VR isn't doing so well.
I hope I've made some sense, I don't feel I've articulated my thoughts exactly, but it's the best I can probably do with the brain I've been given.
I hope some day, for some reason, David Duchovny is investigated by the FBI. Because that would make a great story.
